Wildlife Viewing – When Do You See the Most?
The long dry season from June to October is undeniably the golden safari season. Why? Because the tall grass shrivels up and every animal is forced to gather at the few remaining water sources. Elephants, zebras, buffalo, lions – you’ll be amazed at just how crowded life becomes around a single watering hole.
The short dry season in January and February also offers excellent sightings – with fewer tourists and lush green landscapes still fresh after the short rains.
⭐ Best Time
June – October (dry season) & January – February Up to 33 species in a single day Fewer tourists: Jan / Feb
Big Five Sightings – Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard & Rhino
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s most reliable Big Five destination. On 260 km² of crater floor all five species live year-round – including the critically rare black rhino, almost impossible to find elsewhere. Visit between June and September for optimal visibility and road conditions.
In the Serengeti, lions and elephants are present all year. Leopards are best spotted in the Seronera Valley (May–July), where they drape their kills across acacia branches. Buffalo gather in herds of thousands during the dry season.

Mara River Crossing – Earth’s Most Spectacular Natural Event
Millions of wildebeest and zebras throw themselves into the crocodile-infested Mara River – a spectacle that leaves even seasoned safari veterans speechless. You’ll need patience, because the herds decide on their own when to leap. Sometimes you wait for hours, and then suddenly chaos erupts.
The main crossings happen in the northern Serengeti (Lamai / Kogatende), from where the herds continue into Kenya’s Masai Mara. The window is narrow: August to October is essential, with peak action in September.
⭐ Best Time
August – October · Peak: September
Northern Serengeti: Lamai / Kogatende
Calving Season – 8,000 Births Every Single Day
Imagine this: in the southern Serengeti, across the Ndutu and Ngorongoro regions, up to 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every day. The tiny newcomers are standing on their own legs within minutes – and they have to be, because lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are always close by.
The predator–prey drama is more intense during this period than anywhere else on Earth. January to March is your window – ideally spent at a mobile camp right in the heart of Ndutu.
⭐ Best Time
January – March · Hotspot: Ndutu / Southern Serengeti
Most intense predator action of the year

Ngorongoro Crater
Often called the 8th Natural Wonder of the World. Within 260 km², you’ll find Africa’s highest wildlife density. June to September offers optimal visibility and road quality. Yet January and February draw visitors too, with fresh-green scenery and noticeably fewer crowds.
Rhino sightings here are the most reliable in all of Tanzania. Inside the crater, it is 5–8°C cooler than in Arusha (max. 22–25°C).
Open Year-Round
07
Tarangire National Park
Tanzania’s best-kept secret. From July to October, over 300 elephants a day converge on the Tarangire River – one of the largest elephant concentrations anywhere in Africa. Giant baobab trees lend the landscape an otherworldly atmosphere.
From November to April, migratory birds arrive in their thousands – over 550 species have been recorded here. Max. temperature in July: 28°C.
Best: Jul – Oct
08
Lake Manyara
Small but sensational! The lake sits beneath the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment and is famous for its tree-climbing lions – a phenomenon almost unheard of elsewhere in the world. June to October brings the best sightings.
From November to May, the lake transforms into a pink flamingo paradise. Water birds and pelicans complete the picture. Max. temp.: 30°C, with pleasant nights at 16–18°C.
Flamingos: Nov – May
09
Lake Natron
Lake Natron – The Red Ghost Lake
Lake Natron is one of the most inhospitable and simultaneously most fascinating places on Earth. The water is so caustic and alkaline (pH 10.5) that it can calcify animals – and yet it is the most important breeding ground for lesser flamingos in East Africa.
The best months are September to March, when temperatures are slightly more bearable. In summer, the shoreline can reach a scorching 60°C! Plan a day trip from Arusha, ideally combined with a climb up Ol Doinyo Lengai next door.
⭐ Best Time

Ol Doinyo Lengai
Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai – the “Mountain of God”
The Maasai’s sacred volcano (2,878 m) is a serious physical challenge. The night ascent begins around midnight – after 5 to 7 hours of steep climbing, sunrise rewards you with views of Lake Natron, the Serengeti, and Kilimanjaro all at once.
The summit is an active volcano with unique black natrocarbonatite lava – found nowhere else on Earth. Best climbing season: June to October, when rain is unlikely and the rock is dry. During the long rains (March–May), the muddy slopes become a genuinely dangerous nightmare.
⭐ Best Time
June – October · Ascent: always at night (depart midnight)
Difficulty: Challenging No climbing gear required
12
Kilimanjaro
Climbing Kilimanjaro – the Roof of Africa (5,895 m)
Kilimanjaro is Tanzania’s ultimate goal – and with the right preparation, it is within reach for any healthy adult. There are two ideal windows each year:
- January – March: Clear skies after the short rains, less crowded routes
- July – October: Main season, most reliable weather, dry trails
At the summit (Uhuru Peak), temperatures drop to –15°C to –25°C, even colder with wind chill. Don’t worry about gear: everything you need can be rented right here in Arusha.
⭐ Best Time
Jan – Mar & Jul – Oct · Avoid: Apr / May (long rains)

Whale Watching
Whale Watching – Humpbacks off Zanzibar & Pemba
Little known but truly extraordinary: humpback whales migrate north from Antarctica through the Indian Ocean each year – and pass right through the channel between Zanzibar, Pemba and the mainland. This makes a combined safari-and-whale-watching trip genuinely unique.
The best sightings are reported from July to September, when the whales travel north for their breeding season. Operators in Nungwi and Matemwe (north-east Zanzibar) offer half-day boat tours.
⭐ Best Time
July – September · Depart from: Nungwi or Pemba Island

Budget Tip
Best Prices – How To Save Safari Costs?
The “green season” (March to May, especially April) offers the lowest prices of the year – many lodges cut their rates. And here’s what most travellers don’t realise: the rains typically fall at night, while days are often sunny and refreshingly cool.
The landscape bursts into vivid green, migratory birds arrive in huge numbers, and you’ll often have entire parks practically to yourself. Perfect for photographers and nature lovers who don’t want their view blocked by ten other vehicles at the water hole.
